The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating a shooting that occurred in Van Buren County yesterday when officers answered a number of 911 calls east of Cantril.

A preliminary report from the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation states that at around 11:00 a.m. Van Buren County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to numerous 911 reports of a male subject wearing a military uniform and armed with a rifle walking westbound along highway 2, east of Cantril.  The subject was allegedly making obscene gestures at passing motorists.

Once deputies arrived on scene, the male subject was ordered to drop his firearm.  At that time, the subject pointed the firearm at the deputies.  Due to the subject’s actions, the man was fatally shot by one of the responding Sheriff’s deputies.

The officer involved in the shooting is being investigated by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.  The subject’s name is not being released at this time, pending notification of family members.  More information will be released later.
